Quick Introduction
From Searchbastard
Searchbastard is a bunch of tools for searching (fast, fast, fast!).
Contents |
[edit] The Searchbar
The Searchbar holds groups of engines, which you arrange in Settings. In the example above: To search Wikipedia, write some text in the searchfield, and click the Wikipedia icon. To search for the same term in Chambers, click on the Chambers icon. To perform a multisearch in Wikipedia, Chambers and Google images, click on "fav", which is a "Multisearch" icon. "images" is also a group, but it has been set up as "Dropdown" instead of "Multisearch and icons". To search in new tab, hold down ctrl while clicking. Rearrange the engines with drag/drop, set properties for an engine by right-clicking and choosing "Properties". You can do more - See The Searchbar for a complete feature description.
[edit] LookItUp (Aka "Selection search")
The "LookItUp" feature allows you to quickly look up words in a document. Step 1: Select the text you want to look up. Step 2: Type the alias of an engine or a group. And voila! - A sidebar opens with the search result. Aliases are set up in settings, and could for example be "w" or "wik" for wikipedia. Step 3: At this stage you have three options.
- Type another alias to look up the word in another engine/group
- Select some other text. As soon as you selected it, the word will be looked up, using the same engine/group. - Very useful for hard texts (you just leave the sidebar open and doubleclick on words whenever you need to)
- Press Esc to close the sidebar
[edit] Smart keyword search (aka "Address bar search", aka "Location bar search")
The "Smart keyword search" extends the popular firefox feature, so you can also use this method to search groups and searchbastard engines. Example: Type "dict canopy" in the address bar, and hit enter. If you for example have defined "dict" to be the alias of a group of dictionaries, a multisearch page will open, showing the results of all dictionaries.
[edit] Searchbastard engines
The search result on these engines has a header like this:
In this example, you can choose search method, and cleanup. This illustrates the two major strengths of Searchbastard engines: The ability to provide search options, and the ability to clean up the results (remove ads, navigation, etc).
[edit] Translation
You can quickly translate between two languages by writing ie "en-da banana" in the location bar. Searchbastard will then look up "banana" in all the Searchbastard engines that supports the English-Danish combination. To learn more about this feature, see Dictionaries functionality
